AQUARIUS – the Sign.
We have just recently (the 21st. of January) moved into the Sign of Aquarius so what is it all about?
To understand any Sign you really need to understand all of them, because no Sign exists in isolation. The symbolism of each Sign is derived in part from its place in the full cycle, in relation to the preceding and following Signs especially but also the Sign which is its opposite. Some of its symbolism is also derived from its position in its half cycle and some from its position in the quarter cycle or Season. The placement in the Season will determine whether a Sign is Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable. Finally a Sign derives some of its character from its association with an Element; namely Earth, Water, Air or Fire.
The first thing to say about Aquarius is that the name is Latin for Water-Bearer. In ancient times the name for this Sign was ‘Lord of the Canals’ because at this time of the year water from snow melt high in the mountains would flow thru the canals. The symbols for the Water Bearer usually shows the water being poured from a jug. This often causes people to mistakenly think Aquarius is a Water Sign but the ‘water’ being carried is the ‘water of life’. In ancient times it was of course actual water being distributed thru canals and this word ‘distributed’ is one of the keys to understanding Aquarius. It is worth noting that the words distribution, contribution and tributary are all linked etymologically.
The idea of distributing water thru canals is a democratic system. Thinks of a system of without canals where people had access to water from a river or from wells for example. To get water people would have to go to the river or the well but with a canal the water can be taken to the people. Water from rivers and wells is restrictive of growth whereas a network of canals allow expansion into new territory and distributes water to those who might not have access to a river or well. Rivers are also hierarchical where the water flows from a high place (mountain)to lower places (valleys). This can symbolize power flowing from on high down to the people which is how Monarchy works. Canals can be arranged to distribute water sideways so to speak which is symbolically – Democracy.
As civilisations develop the concept of distribution of power also grows. The water of the Water-Bearer became symbolic of the ‘Water of Life’ or power. Knowledge is associated with power so Aquarius becomes the distributor of knowledge which equals power. Distribution of power is the basis of Democracy. It is no mistake that nowadays Aquarius is linked to the Internet and networks for the distribution of knowledge.
The afore-mentioned symbolism for Aquarius fits very nicely with its position following Capricorn in the full cycle. As mentioned above access to water via rivers or wells is restrictive of growth. Growth is not prevented but it is limited to the nearness of this all important resource – water. Limitation, restriction, regulation and slow growth or development are Capricornian so along comes Aquarius and changes the old system, expanding and developing things in a much more egalitarian way. If Capricorn represents Government, Regulation and Bureaucracy then Aquarius represent rebellion and (re)distribution of power. Now the Sign that is opposite Aquarius is Leo which represents Monarchy and rule by one individual so Aquarius becomes the Sign of democracy, the rule of many.
This symbolism of Aquarius can also be seen as preparation for the next part of the cycle – Pisces.
Among other things Pisces symbolizes the Ocean and the water of canals must inevitably flow to the ocean. What if we are talking of the more symbolic aspect of Aquarius; the distribution of knowledge or power. does this lead to Pisces? Yes it can be seen that way. The Aquarian phase of development is about knowledge being increasingly distributed among more and more people. If this continued without hindrance the result would be a complete distribution of all knowledge so that it is no longer your knowledge or my knowledge, or even the knowledge of our group, but communal knowledge to which everyone has equal access. To go back to water for a moment, in an ocean (Pisces) everyone has equal access to the water, in fact they are surrounded and supported by it.
Knowledge as mentioned is power so Aquarius can also be seen as preparing the way for complete distribution of power in the Pisces phase. For some that means anarchy which is from Greek and means ‘no ruler’ and there are some who believe that anarchy means that no-one (not one) rules but everyone (Every One) rules. Complete distribution of power is also the ideal of pure Communism where everyone is equal and everyone owns everything. This is the ideal Piscean condition which in reality has not been achieved by various Communist regimes.
This then is Aquarius in relation to Capricorn and Pisces but what about its position in the Half cycle which begins with Libra? This half of the whole cycle is said to be about social development in contrast to the first half which is about individual development.
Libra begins awareness of others and the need to relate to them. Scorpio symbolizes the things which flow from relationships, such as sex, shared resources and death. Sagittarius is the phase of reflecting on relationships, being philosophical and trying to understand all relationships, the causes and results of human interaction.
The beginning, growth and development of human relationships leads to the need for control and regulation which of course means government and bureaucracy and Capricorn. Too much government, restriction or regulation leads some to rebel and call for more freedom and more equality which means we are now back to Aquarius.
The position of Aquarius in its quarter cycle or season means that it is considered a ‘Fixed’ Sign. Each season is divided into 3 parts called Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable and each has a slightly different quality.
The word Cardinal comes from Latin ‘cardo’ meaning ‘hinge’ or ‘pivot’. It is the reason that pivotal or important Bishops in the Roman Catholic Church are called Cardinals. A pivotal or Cardinal Sign is one that allows the opening of a stage of development, just as the hinge of a door allows it to open onto something. The ‘Fixed Sign that follows a Cardinal Sign helps to ‘fix’ whatever has begun in a particular season and to allow it to more fully develop. This will lead in turn to the Mutable (changing) next Sign which will distil the essence of the season ready to change into the next. To understand Aquarius as the Fixed Sign of Winter we have to know what symbolism is associated with this season.
To fully understand the symbolism of Winter we need to understand the full cycle. Spring is the season of beginnings; a time of germination, hatching and (re)birth. Summer is the season of growth and maturation of the plants that come out of germinated seed, the creatures that have hatched from eggs or which have been born. Growth and maturity lead to the fruition of Autumn when many plants produce fruit and many animals have matured into some form of independence. Autumn is for many animals the mating season before winter sets in. All of this leads to Winter – the season of dissemination. The seeds, in the fruits, which germinate in Spring must be distributed (disseminated) in Winter. The fertilized egg or fetus inside the bird or animal must be protected thru Winter in order that laying of eggs and hatching or birth can take place in Spring. This is a time of preparation.
The concepts of dissemination, protection and preparation are associated with Winter and it is Capricorn which is associated with the forward planning that is needed. Capricorn becomes the Sign of organisation and structure which is the first step in dissemination. Aquarius, as the fixed Sign of Winter, symbolizes the widespread distribution of seeds in order that germination when it comes should be more effective. Aquarius is also concerned that as many as possible should have protection and that preparation is undertaken for as many individuals as possible.
Finally Aquarius is associated with the Element of Air. The Ancients believed that the world was made of only 4 Elements; Earth, Water, Air and Fire. Of course we know now that there are many more but interestingly science recognises 4 states of matter; Solids, Liquids, Gases and Plasma which correspond with the Elements, which in turn correspond to Body, Emotions, Mind and Spirit.
The 4 Elements/States of matter can be thought of as different levels of stability or energy. Earth – Solids are the most stable and least energetic. Water – Liquids are less stable and more energetic than solids. Air – Gases are less stable but more energetic than liquids. Fire – Plasma is the least stable but the most energetic.
The question is why is a particular Sign associated with a particular Element? If we begin with Aries, which is the usual accepted point to start the whole cycle, what Element would seem to be appropriate for it? What is needed for breaking thru a shell during hatching, breaking out of a seed coat during germination, breaking out of the amniotic sac in order to be born into the world or for breaking thru from the Spirit World into manifestation? I would suggest that a highly energetic Spiritual force is needed for these things so the Element of Fire seems appropriate for Aries the beginning of the cycle. When hatching, germination, birth or manifestation has taken place then the new entity needs to stabilize as quickly as possible so it seems appropriate that the Element for stability is assigned to Taurus the Sign that follows Aries. Gemini the next Sign reacts in a way to the solidity and physicality of Taurus by becoming more energetic, restless and thoughtful which can best be represented by the Element of Air and its association with the Mind. The next Sign, Cancer, is again something of a reaction by becoming less energetic or restless and becoming more stable, while retaining some energy and yet not becoming as fully stable as Taurus. The most appropriate Element to attribute to Cancer is Water. The next Sign is Leo but why should it be associated with Fire? It doesn’t make sense for Water to continue the whole cycle of development by reacting back into a solid state. Nor does it makes sense to react back into gas state of Gemini so the only option is to become as energetic as possible and become Fire. Think of it this way; Spirit, which is the creative force symbolized by Fire, manifests in a body (Earth). The organism then needs to become aware of its environment (Mind – Air) which brings an emotional (Water)or instinctive reaction leading to a new energetic (Fire – Spirit) impulse to do something. This new impulse leads to a new manifestation of something and so on.
All of the Signs can be looked at in this way and it will be seen they follow this pattern of Fire, Earth, Air and Water. This leads to Aquarius being the Fixed Air Sign which means strong mentality, and even fixed ideas which of course can lead to acts of rebellion or revolution as mentioned above.
So that is Aquarius the Water-Bearer.
BASHAR al ASSAD
Pluto, the Lord of Death and Transformation is still stalking the world seeking out tyrants. When Pluto does his work they will have to transform or die. It happened to Gaddafi and it might yet happen to others because Pluto’s work on autocrats goes on until 2024.
There has been a lot of violence in Syria but Assad is still there. Can he survive? What sort of person is he? A look at his chart(below) might help.
Natal chart for Bashar al Assad
A first glance shows two main points of focus; a cluster of planets in Virgo and another small group opposite in Pisces. Is Assad lost in the details(Virgo) or lost in the dreams(Pisces)?? Perhaps he fluctuates (opposition) between the two.
A closer inspection shows a tight conjunction of Sun, Pluto and Uranus with Mercury a little way off.
Sun in Virgo would give him a basic need to pay attention to details, maybe missing the big picture in the process. He probably has a strong need to being doing something but what? With both Uranus and Pluto combust(within 3 degrees of the Sun) this need will most likely manifest in a very erratic or unexpected way which will also be very cathartic. Any change that is undertaken will be done very carefully and cleverly in such a way that the world at large will find difficult to oppose. This is someone who keeps changing the rules and just when one set of rules is sort of accepted they get thrown out and another lot set up. Very unpredictable!
Mercury in Virgo will focus this man’s mind even more on analysis and detail, detail, detail. Again – not seeing the big picture. Doesn’t want to look at what is happening in the wider world.
The planets opposed to Sun, Pluto and Uranus are Moon, Chiron and Saturn in Pisces.
Sun and Moon in opposition are important enough in themselves without the other planets. If this was a Mundane chart the Sun would be interpreted as the Leader and the Moon as the People being opposed. It is however a personal chart but even so Sun opposite Moon makes it hard to reconcile feelings with inner drive. The Moon in Pisces could mean lost in Fantasy as much as lost in dreams. I think Assad is being pulled in two directions, torn between fantasy and reality. The Moon is in quite a tight conjunction with Chiron so what does Chiron do? It can be likened to a doorway or the key that unlocks a door into something. In this case because it is in Pisces I would suggest that a door into the subconscious realm is opened with all its attendant dreams and fantasies. This is the unreal world in opposition to the ‘real’ world of Virgo with all its petty details. The planet Saturn, representing restrictions or lessons, is also quite close by and that might indicate wanting to withdraw from the burdens or duties of life. The doorway that Chiron opens must look very tempting. The Moon could also represent some past dream that is in conflict with current reality.
The planet Mars is conjunct Neptune and that actually gives added energy to fantasies which might be pursued aggressively. With this conjunction in Scorpio there will be a sting in the tail awaiting for those who get in the way. Mars in Scorpio is someone who takes things very personally and the response is to attack or self destruct. Assad might be doing both. Neptune here will probably mean he sees his ideals as being attacked not just his person.
There are two other planets which are not fully involved with the rest of the chart and they are Venus in Libra and Jupiter in Gemini. What do they mean?
Venus is said to represent the things we are attracted to in life(the power of attraction) and Libra represents relationships. Venus is said to ‘rule’ Libra because of the power of attraction but it can just as easily mean being attracted to the ‘idea’ of relationship rather than being attracted to an individual.
Jupiter is the planet which helps us expand and grow by incorporating things into our lives. Gemini is about ideas, communication and information so with Jupiter here there might be a tendency to create a vast storehouse of knowledge or information. Perhaps Assad has accumulated a vast databank of information about the people he relates to, due to the Jupiter in Gemini trine to Venus in Libra. Maybe that’s how he has managed to keep so many ‘loyal’ to him, so far at least.
Sometimes it is worth looking at a chart to see what is missing as much as what is there. In Assad’s chart all of the Fire Signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, are empty. That could mean a lack of a real sense of self awareness or confidence, and perhaps a lack of real religious belief or spirituality. A lack of real passion for anything?
Cancer and Capricorn are also empty; does this man have a real home, either among family or society?
Taurus is also empty; is there physical thing of real value to him?
Finally Aquarius is empty; does Assad have any connexion whatsoever with democracy or humanitarian ideals?
CAPRICORN ASSOCIATIONS. – RELATIONSHIPS.
As always if you want a better idea about possible relationships I would recomend having a birth chart drawn up. A proper chart will show gaps that may be filled by a partner to your benefit.
It is also worth considering what a relationship might be about. It is sometimes better to get what you need rather than what you want. If you are sick you might WANT sympathy but what you NEED is a cure.
Keeping in mind some of the keywords for Capricorn such as authority, management, organisation, planning, status, on a general basis we can make some comparisons.
Earth Signs are generally thought to be compatible with each other, but Earth(solid practicality) alone doesn’t give life.
Imagine Capricorn with Capricorn; who would be the boss? Capricorns tend to be authoritative so with 2 together, which would accept the authority of the other? Who would manage and organise the relationship or make the plans? This mix might be better for friendship than partnership.
What about Capricorn with another Earth Sign such as Taurus? Capricorn would probably be the manager here and Taurus might be happy as long as their material needs are satisfied, as they are likely to be. This relationship might be a steady down to earth partnership with no great excitement. Taurus(the contented cow) might seem a little plodding for the mountain goat but might be able to show Capricorn what things have value. A lot will depend on the other elements in the respective charts.
The final Earth Signs is Virgo and here again there should be basic harmony between 2 practical people. Virgos generally are not as ambitious as Capricorns and would probably let Capricorn make the plans. A Virgo would be more restless than a Capricorn and want to be doing things now while Capricorn is making those long term plans. This partnership could work well if Capricorn sets the goals and Virgo attends to the details and checks out the small print.
One of the Water Signs, Pisces, Cancer or Scorpio would most likely be a better match for Capricorn than a fellow Earth Sign. On a symbolic basis Water mixed with Earth is productive if in the right proportions. Dry earth completely devoid of moisture is lifeless and water-logged soil is also non-productive. Soil(Earth) with just enough moisture becomes useful and potentially productive.
How do Capricorns get along with Pisces? If we compare the symbols for each we could say that Capricorn is representative of Mountains(which goats are fond of climbing) and Pisces can be symbolised by the Ocean. If any of the Earth Signs can withstand the powerful oceanic tides and currents which subconsciously affect a Piscean it could easily be the stubborn, determined, heights reaching mountain of Capricorn. The Capricorn would be a rock for the Pisces to crash against, and the constantly changing and crashing tides of the Pisces could be the incentive for the mountain goat to climb even higher up the mountain. This could be a good mix.
Cancer is another Water Sign and potentially a good partner for Capricorn. They are both Cardinal Signs meaning each is creative in its own way and sets the foundation for different things. These 2 Signs are Polar opposites and could be seen as complete balance or complete opposition, possibly fluctuating between the 2 states. Cancer creates the basis of family life with its structure ensuring personal security while Capricorn creates the basis of society(the larger family) with its structure ensuring social security. The family structures of Cancer are based on nurture and personal connections while the social structures of Capricorn are based on achievement and impersonal connections. Whether this mix is balance or opposition will depend greatly on the rest of the respective charts.
The final water Sign to assess with Capricorn is Scorpio. As a Fixed Water Sign Scorpio is subject to the flow of strong currents but unlike Pisces they are not tidal but rather a flow in one general direction. Capricorn and Scorpio can be a good mix. It can be symbolised as a strongly flowing river (Scorpio) carrying soil down from the mountain(Capricorn) to distribute in the valley. Capricorn achievements and resources can be shared with others via Scorpio (the Sign of shared resources). This might be a very good workable relationship for both Capricorn and Scorpio; Capricorn happy to be the achiever and Scorpio happy to be the sharer.
Is Air and Earth a good mix? Here again much will depend on the proportion. Too much Air( a strong wind) will rob soil(Earth) of life giving moisture whereas waterlogged soil, without air will be lifeless.
Can Capricorn mix with Aquarius its following Sign? That is like asking if a Bureaucrat can get along with a Revolutionary? Among other things Capricorn is the Sign of rules, regulations, order and hierarchy. Aquarius is among other things associated with overturning the rules and regulations or in other words Revolution. The fact is however after every revolution in history some kind of order has to be restored and that inevitably involves the creation of some bureaucracy. It could be argued from the above that Aquarius needs Capricorn but does Capricorn need Aquarius? Bureaucrats (Capricorns) probably think they don’t need change but they must, even a little, if they are to grow. Capricorn with Aquarius might be a case of getting what is needed rather than what is wanted.
The next Air Sign to consider with Capricorn is Gemini the Sign of the communicator. Does a Bureaucrat or Manager (Capricorn) desire or need a publicist (Gemini)? A bureaucrat or manager probably does not WANT a publicist and they may even want to keep tight control over what is known about what they are doing. There may be times however when the Bureaucrat or Manager would like selective information to be available so there may be times when a Capricorn could use Gemini’s ability to communicate. Gemini might benefit from Capricorn’s structured approach to things but all in all the Capricorn – Gemini relationship is likely to be based on usefulness or need rather than want.
The last Air Sign to compare with Capricorn is Libra the Sign of balance. Like Capricorn Libra is a Cardinal Sign meaning that forms the basis for something. In the case of Libra the stage is being set for interpersonal relationships. These initial relationships between individuals will develop to the point where rules and regulations governing relationships will have to made. This is where Capricorn comes in, setting down the rules of behavior in relationships in general so that Society can develop. Any relationship between Capricorn and Libra might be challenging, because the Libra will focus on the interpersonal communication but Capricorn is likely to focus more on practicalities. Capricorn might find Libra too ‘airy – fairy’ and Libra will probably consider Capricorn too inflexible. This is probably not a good mix.
Now we can move on to the Fire Signs beginning with Aries. This is also a Cardinal Sign with Aries setting the stage for individual expression. It is hard to see how individual needs can be harmonised with a regulated, hierarchical structure so beloved by Capricorns. In some ways this relationship might be like that between Capricorn and Aquarius, based on need rather than desire.
A Capricorn relationship with the next Fire Sign Leo is probably going to be a big No- No because both will want to be the boss. Leo likes to exert Personal authority and set the rules of the relationship, but Capricorn will want the impersonal ‘rules’, as authorised by ‘Society’, to be obeyed. Lets face it, lions (Leo) are not usually associated with mountains; they like to be on the plains where they can be seen. Capricorn( the Horned Goat) is quite happy to be up the mountain towering above the herd.
So that leaves the final Fire Sign Sagittarius to be compared. This might be a better mix for Capricorn than the other Fire Signs because they are next to each other in the cycle. To some degree Sagittarius, the Philosopher and Thinker, sets the scene for Capricorn, the Organiser and Manager. Capricorn may be frustrated with the Archer constantly shooting off arrows and wondering where things might lead because Capricorn already wants to organise what has been thought about. Sagittarius might find Capricorn’s organisation a little too soon because there are so many things still to think about. Even so the manager can benefit from the Thinker’s thoughts and the Manager can give the Thinker a structure in which thoughts can fit together.
Finally it is worth repeating that only a full birth chart will give real guidance about relationships.

CAPRICORN ASSOCIATIONS. COUNTRIES, REGIONS, CITIES, GEMS.
COUNTRIES and REGIONS.
There are various reasons for associating a country or a region with a particular sign and they are not always obvious. A country is sometimes linked to a particular Sign because its official beginning comes during the Sign.
For example Australia officially came into being (as the Commonwealth of Australia) on January 1st. 1901, which equates to 10 degrees of Capricorn. It is important to realise that Australia was developing its character long before it came into being as an official legal entity. For that reason a country can be associated with more than one Sign.
Many astrologers associate the Australian character with Sagittarius because it is an expansive country and is called ‘the Lucky Country’ which means Jupiter/Sagittarian influence.
It is not easy to have an official beginning for a region but characteristics can be associated with a region such as Macedonia being mountainous and therefore Capricornian.
On that basis here are some countries and regions for Capricorn.
Afghanistan, Albania, Australia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Burma (Myanmar), Cameroon, Cuba, Greece, Haiti, Illyria, India, Lebanon, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mexico, Orkney Islands, Thrace, United Kingdom.
CITIES. The reasons that govern associations for cities are the similar to those of countries. Cities may have an official founding date but have a previously developed character which might be different. Taking that into account here are some Capricorn cities.
Asheville (NC), Atlanta (GA), Austin (TX), Bismark (ND), Brandenburg (Germany), Brussels (Belgium), Cedar Rapids (IA), Charleston (W.Va), Chicago (IL), Cleveland (OH), Delhi, Fargo (ND), Ghent, Jersey City (NJ), Key West (FL), Mexico City (Mexico), Montreal (Canada), New London (CT), New York (NY), Oxford (UK), Port Said (Egypt), Prescott (AZ), Rockford (IL), Salt Lake City (UT), Seattle (WA), Tallahassee (FL), Toledo (OH), Virginia Beach (VA).
GEMS and MINERALS – Amber, Coal, Jet, Onyx,Sapphire plus Black colored minerals generally.

ASTROLOGY. An Introduction.
The topics on this site are Astrology related but there may be some of you who are sceptical about the whole idea of Astrology. That is reasonable. A certain amount of scepticism is healthy. It is good to have an open mind but you don’t need to have it so open that your brains fall out.
It is my belief that there is something at work in the body of knowledge called Astrology. I think of it that way instead of saying that Astrology works. After all is it usual to say that Archaeology ‘works’ or Meteorology ‘works’ or that Zoology ‘works’? Something is ‘at work’ in those areas of knowledge and something is ‘at work’ in Astrology also but what?
The first thing I’d like to say is that I don’t believe that the influence is due to the Stars as the name Astrology suggests. I do think that ‘time’ influences us – if you don’t believe that try sunbathing on a British beach in December or January (OK I know even in July and August its not always a good idea either). Try taking your kids to school at 9 PM instead of 9 AM, or having lunch at 1 AM instead of 1 PM. Try growing tomatos in Winter instead of Summer.
We are influenced by time and time moves in cycles rather than in straight lines. The cyclic changes of time gives us our Seasons. Each Season influences the way we think, feel and behave. Note that we are ‘influenced’ by time but not necessarily ‘ruled’ by it. We could go to a British beach in January but most of us would choose not to. Does that mean we are influenced by the Seasons? I would say ‘influenced’ – YES; ‘ruled’ by – NO.
The 4 Seasons are the natural divisions of the Yearly Cycle. There are 2 Equinoxes when day and night are equal. Following the Spring Equinox light increases and Day becomes longer than Night until the Summer Solstice. At this point when Day length is at its maximum days begin to shorten again. The next natural point is the Autumn Equinox when again Day and Night length are equal but following this Night length begins to increase. This continues until the Winter Solstice when the shortest day is reached. Following this, day length begins to increase again until it reaches equal length with Night at the Spring Equinox. The cycle then continues as before. Time doesn’t just move straight ahead, it moves in a cycle.
Time is the key to Astrology; the repeating cycles of Time, each with its own influence. The Seasons can be thought of this way;
Spring is the time of Birth, Germination or Hatching.
Summer is the the Season of Growth, Flowering and Maturation.
Autumn is the Season of Ripening and Fruition.
Winter is the time of Rest and Dissemination.
We humans have been part of the cycle of the Seasons for many thousands of years so the cycle is now part of our subconscious. To a large extent we think, feel and behave according to the seasons.
This is all very well you might think but there are 4 Seasons and 12 ‘Signs’ in Astrology. That is a good point. I would suggest that every Season has a beginning which is a bit different to the end when the scene is being set for the next Season. Furthermore I would suggest that the middle of each Season is also somewhat different to both the beginning and the end so that each Season has 3 parts. We now end up with a Yearly cycle of 12 parts or phases which can be related to the 12 ‘Signs’ of Astrology.
How did these divisions of the Yearly cycle become linked to Constellations? Well in ancient times before clocks or calenders one way to mark the passage of time was to look at the Stars. At the time of the Spring Equinox a certain constellation appears on the Eastern horizon at sunrise.
For the past 2000 years or so the Constellation of Pisces has been on the Eastern horizon. Before that, about 4000 years ago, because of a process called Precession of the Equinoxes, the constellation on the Eastern horizon was Aries.
It was in that period about 4000 years ago that Astrology was being developed and the constellation Aries at that time was taken as a ‘sign’ that Spring was beginning. A sign is just a signal that something is happening or about to happen and approximately 4000 years ago the constellation Aries was the signal or ‘Sign’ for the beginning of Spring. The constellation Taurus would then have signalled the middle of Spring and so on.
It is important to distinguish between Constellations, which are groups of stars which can be used to mark the passage of time, and ‘Signs’ which are divisions of the Yearly Cycle. They were once aligned but not any more although the names have been retained.
In summary it can be said that we are influenced by time and that time moves in cycles. The Yearly Cycle is divided naturally into 4 Seasons, each of which has 3 parts; Beginning, Middle and End. This gives an overall division of the Yearly Cycle into 12 parts which correspond with the 12 Signs of Astrology.

ASTROLOGY and the SYRIAN SITUATION.

Above; chart for BASHAR al ASSAD.
N.B. In the above chart no house numbers are shown because the birth time is in doubt. A noon chart has been used.
In a previous post about Pluto looking at China, the government and Communist Party were the organisations symbolised by Capricorn. In Syria things are slightly different. The President himself, Bashar al Assad, is the main focus of Capricorn associations such as authority, autocracy, rigidity and limitation. To understand the transit of Pluto thru Capricorn from a Syrian perspective means looking very closely at Assad in particular and how this transits and transits in general affect him.
Perhaps the first thing to notice is that there are no planets in Capricorn with which a transiting Pluto can make direct contact. Pluto is currently at about 6 degrees of Capricorn and the only planet Assad has near 6 degrees is Mercury at 4.28 Virgo. This is a reasonably close aspect making it near enough a Trine (60 degrees) and of course trines are supposed to be beneficial so this is probably not a problem for Assad.
In Assad’s chart above Pluto is combust meaning it is within 3 degrees of the Sun, which makes it hard to distinguish the influence of Pluto from the Sun in his life. Pluto is often seen as the Destroyer because of its action of exposing and eliminating resulting in transformation. It could be that Assad is transformed by this whole Pluto upheaval.
The planet Uranus is just combust also in his chart and that brings in the element of surprise and erratic behavior as well as radical or revolutionary change. It is hard to predict what he will do. His natal Uranus conjunct his natal Pluto can give rise to extreme destructiveness and anarchy.
Looking at other transits for Assad shows that Mars will be conjunct his Uranus on the 15th December until 19th or 20th. On the 18th of December Mars will also come into conjunction with his Pluto until the 21st when it will also be coming into conjunction with his Sun. This will last until the 29th when it begins to move out of range.
Mars is the planet of drive, energy. assertiveness, aggression and sometimes violence. When Mars transits Assad’s Uranus from the 15th December until the 20th it may energise him into erratic behavior doing something unexpected or explosive. This is in his nature anyway with his natal Sun conjunct his natal Uranus but the Mars transit will add extra energy.
From 18th December until about the 21st Mars will be transiting Assad’s Pluto. In his natal chart Pluto is conjunct his natal Sun which can be seen as an intense loner with a tendency towards self annihilation. This man wants to win at all costs. Mars crossing his natal Pluto will energise this tendency driving Assad towards either self transformation or self destruction. Judging from past events it will probably be the latter but Assad is a man full of surprises.
The final part of this complex Mars transit will see Mars crossing Assad’s natal Sun adding to his ambition and desire to be on top. This transit of Mars conjunct Sun will make Assad defiant seeking to challenge. No holds will be barred. It may be an all or nothing scenario for him.
As an aside from the main transit for a few days from 15th December until around the 18th Assad will experience transiting Mercury square to his natal Mercury. This might make it difficult to for him to think clearly or to communicate his ideas.
It looks like for the next couple of weeks Assad will be under a lot of tension from this Mars transit. The above is what might happen to Assad personally within the larger issue of Pluto thru Capricorn.
