PISCES ASSOCIATIONS – PLANTS.

Probably the most common reason for associating a plant with Pisces is if it grows in or near water because Pisces is a Water Sign. Plants that grow near or even in the sea might especially b, e connected to Pisces, because this is the Sign related to the Ocean. The ‘ruling’ planet of Pisces is Neptune so many of the plants listed will actually be plants of Neptune primarily. Neptune is very much associated with strong scents and mind altering substances so those types of plant also becomes linked to Pisces. One final reason for linking plants to Pisces might simply be their flowering time of end of February into almost the end of March, in the Northern Hemisphere.

PISCES – the SIGN.

On February 19th the Sun moves into the Sign of Pisces, so what is it all about?

Pisces is the final Sign, the Sign of completion. It is the Sign that completes what began in Aries, and what began in Libra and also what began in Capricorn. Pisces completes the full cycle that began with Aries, as well as the the second half cycle that began with Libra and the final quarter cycle that began with Capricorn. It is the Sign of endings but of course endings are also beginnings.

To understand any Sign you really need to understand all of them, because no Sign exists in isolation. The symbolism of each Sign is derived in part from its place in the full cycle, in relation to the preceding and following Signs and also the Sign which is its opposite. Some of its symbolism is also derived from its position in its half cycle and some from its position in the quarter cycle or Season. The placement in the Season will determine whether a Sign is Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable. Finally a Sign derives some of its character from its association with an Element; namely Earth, Water, Air or Fire.

The first thing to say about Pisces is that the name is simply Latin for Fish (if you pronounce PISCes like BISCuit you will see the connexion). Why are fish(as in the image above) used to represent the last Sign? Actually this last Sign is more about the Ocean but it is easier to symbolize this with Fish than the ocean itself. Streams and rivers that begin in mountains or hills ultimately end in the Ocean, symbolically the place where all things end. Perhaps this Sign should be called Oceanus after the Greek God of the ocean, the great sea that was then believed to surround the known land.

Pisces is the final Sign in the full cycle meaning that it represents completion of the whole process of individual development which began with Aries. The beginning can be taken to mean hatching, germination or birth into a new world. Aries also represents the breakthru of an individual from the Spirit world(or the general Ocean of Life) into existence in the Physical world, in other words the beginning of individuality. This is followed by the Taurus phase representing acquisition, then Gemini in which ideas begin to form and choices must be made. This leads to establishment of family roots and a home in Cancer followed by self confidence and a sense of self worth in Leo. Self confidence leads to being useful or of service in the Virgo phase completing the first half of the cycle.

Libra begins the social half cycle by balancing one’s own individuality with the individuality of others. The word ‘we’ can be used in describing the second half of the whole cycle. If Aries is about ‘I am’ then Libra is about ‘We are’. This is followed by Scorpio the Sign of shared resources as the counterpoint to Taurus the Sign of personal resources. If Taurus represents ‘I have’ then Scorpio represents ‘We have’. The Sagittarian phase becomes social, rather than personal, ideas or philosophies leading to establishment in the family of society which is the Capricorn balance for Cancer. Whereas Cancerian comfort and security leads to Leo’s sense of personal worth and power, Capricorn’s social security, meaning having a place within the greater family, leads to the idea that all should be equally worthy and have equal power as in Aquarius. This leads inevitably to the idea that all are worthy and equal and if Virgo is about an individual being of use and serving others individuals the this is balanced by the Pisces concept of all individuals being of use to all others. Aquarius is about groups and brotherhoods, plural, but Pisces is about The Group, The Brotherhood of All. In the Piscean Ocean there are no boundaries between this group and that; there is no this or that group, there is simply ONE group – US; WE are the group.

Pisces then completes the full cycle of development which began with Aries, but it is also the Sign which prepares the way for the manifestation of a new individual, as in Aries, (Two fish swimming in different directions). The Ocean of Pisces dissolves and absorbs everything which has come into being during the rest of the cycle and from this matrix of substance, ideas and experiences can be born different individuals in Aries, using the same substance and materials in new combination.

This can also be seen looking at the cycle of the Seasons. Spring, which means Aries, Taurus and Gemini, is the time for hatching, birth, germination and beginnings. This leads to Summer, containing Cancer, Leo and Virgo, the time of growth and maturation. Autumn is the season of fruition and the creation of seeds. This is equivalent to Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius. The seeds which are produced in autumn as the result of the interaction of individuals must be disseminated and distributed in Winter if they are to germinate in Spring. The Winter Signs of Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces are concerned with the organisation, distribution and preparation of the fruits(seeds) which have come into being during the previous phases of development. Pisces is the last phase of that wherein the the final boundaries must be broken and dissolved if new lives are to come into being. The egg must incubated and so be prepared for hatching and the seed coat must also be softened if the seed is to send the shoot. Pisces incubates(enfolds) and softens.

Pisces is a Mutable Sign meaning that is the final Sign of a Season which extracts the essence of the previous two Signs in preparation for the following Cardinal Sign.

Pisces is also the final Water Sign. The Ancients believed that the world was made of only 4 Elements; Earth, Water, Air and Fire. Of course we know now that there are many more but interestingly science recognises 4 states of matter; Solids, Liquids, Gases and Plasma which correspond with the Elements, which in turn correspond to Body, Emotions, Mind and Spirit.

The 4 Elements/States of matter can be thought of as different levels of stability or energy. Earth – Solids are the most stable and least energetic. Water – Liquids are less stable and more energetic than solids. Air – Gases are less stable but more energetic than liquids. Fire – Plasma is the least stable but the most energetic.

The question is why is a particular Sign associated with a particular Element? If we begin with Aries, which is the usual accepted point to start the whole cycle, what Element would seem to be appropriate for it? What is needed for breaking thru a shell during hatching, breaking out of a seed coat during germination, breaking out of the amniotic sac in order to be born into the world or for breaking thru from the Spirit World into manifestation? I would suggest that a highly energetic Spiritual force is needed for these things so the Element of Fire seems appropriate for Aries the beginning of the cycle. When hatching, germination, birth or manifestation has taken place then the new entity needs to stabilize as quickly as possible so it seems appropriate that the Element for stability is assigned to Taurus the Sign that follows Aries. Gemini the next Sign reacts in a way to the solidity and physicality of Taurus by becoming more energetic, restless and thoughtful which can best be represented by the Element of Air and its association with the Mind. The next Sign, Cancer, is again something of a reaction by becoming less energetic or restless and becoming more stable, while retaining some energy and yet not becoming as fully stable as Taurus. The most appropriate Element to attribute to Cancer is Water. The next Sign is Leo but why should it be associated with Fire? It doesn’t make sense for Water to continue the whole cycle of development by reacting back into a solid state. Nor does it makes sense to react back into gas state of Gemini so the only option is to become as energetic as possible and become Fire. Think of it this way; Spirit, which is the creative force symbolized by Fire, manifests in a body (Earth). The organism then needs to become aware of its environment (Mind – Air) which brings an emotional (Water)or instinctive reaction leading to a new energetic (Fire – Spirit) impulse to do something. This new impulse leads to a new manifestation of something and so on.

All of the Signs can be looked at in this way and it will be seen they follow this pattern of Fire, Earth, Air and Water. This leads to Pisces being the Mutable Water Sign which means ???that all the emotions associated with the whole cycle of experience are gathered in this Sign giving rise to the instinctive need for creating a whole new set of experiences. So the whole cycle will begin again, perhaps at a more advanced level?

URANUS in ARIES.

At the time this is written Uranus ♅ has been in Aries ♈ since 2011 but it will be there until March 2019 so it still has some years ahead. So what is this transit about? What does Uranus do?

The planet Uranus calls us to move beyond the barriers and limits set up by Saturn(♄). Uranus wants to pull us outwards and onwards beyond the normal structures, habits, systems, routines and patterns of behavior that we become used to under Saturn’s influence. Uranus brings to our attention a wider world and opens us up to new possibilities. It represents radical new approaches to old problems. Uranus’ input is what makes us want to break down our barriers and limitations and move forward to newer and greater things.

The limits Saturn imposes are barriers of exclusion, separating one set of things, ideas or people from another. Uranus changes that by showing that a wider, more inclusive and more equal world is possible. This change is usually brought about by revolution in one form or another because barriers are often so rigid they must be broken down with force. Barriers are rarely dismantled willingly.

Sometimes the only way to deal with rigidly entrenched habits and systems is to break them up and start again with a clean slate. Taking the positive view, Uranus can be seen as re-building or re-structuring rather than total annihilation. What Uranus really does is to open up and reform (re-form – to form again) rather than completely destroy.

Nowadays Uranus can be associated with the Internet which has broken down barriers of communication between many groups of people around the world but even the World Wide Web is not truly universal. There are elites who have more influence over it than the average user and of course there are others who would like to control it altogether. The more things change the more they stay the same. One of the problems of revolutions has always been that an elite inevitably develops no matter how equally things begin.

So what might happen while Uranus is passing thru the Sign of Aries? This Sign is usually taken as the beginning of the whole cycle of Signs and is associated with such things as hatching, germination, birth or the beginning of individuality. These things make it necessary to be assertive, active and even sometimes aggressive.

Uranus in Aries can be thought of as hatching a plan to go beyond personal boundaries and move forward into new territory. If you have had any ideas about how your life can become more inclusive and widened this transit is the time to germinate those ideas. It is no good just thinking about things, with Uranus in Aries it is time for action, doing and making things happen. Aries is about asserting yourself as an individual in the world at large. Uranus in this Sign brings the opportunity to assert yourself in a wider world than you believed possible. The world is not as limited as you thought it was.

Saturn limits but Uranus carries you forwards and outwards into a bigger world but you must act upon the opportunity. If the chances for expansion of self expression are not seized during this transit there will not be another in your lifetime and you may be caught in habits, systems and patterns of behavior that you have built up so far. Will you be part of the new elite which will inevitably develop, or one of the might have beens?

Aries is also associated with creativity, sport, exploration and unfortunately also war. Are we going to see an expansion of individual creativity, previously unthinkable sports records or even new, previously unimagined sports? Will we find anything new in this world of ours or will this transit herald in a new era of extra terrestrial exploration? Are we going to experience new forms of warfare or on a wider scale than ever before? Hopefully this last item will not happen. We can become more INclusive so there is less chance of us against them. Uranus in Aries should bring about new and wider acceptance of individual rights.

NEPTUNE in PISCES

The Bringer of Dreams – Neptune (♆) is back at home in the Ocean of Pisces (♓).

The planet Neptune has an orbit around the Sun which lasts approximately 165 earth years meaning it spends almost 14 years in each Sign. Neptune will be in Pisces until 30 March 2025. The previous transit of Neptune thru Pisces began in 1848 giving rise to period which saw many revolutions in Europe and the publishing of the Communist Manifesto in 1848 by Marx and Engels. It was during this period also that the debate about slavery in the United States was to lead to the Civil War. So what can we expect this time around?

First we should understand what it means to say that Neptune is the Bringer of Dreams before we can understand what it means in Pisces.

Neptune’s function is to dissolve barriers between things. This is because Neptune continues and expands the work that Uranus has performed. If Uranus breaks down barriers and re-distributes such things as power, energy and knowledge then Neptune will extend the process. After Uranus has broken down Saturn’s barriers and limits, things still exist as separate entities, in their own compartments, with links between them. This means that things are organized in a more equal network fashion rather than an hierarchical structure with power increasingly focused towards the peak. Neptune completes the breakdown process so that entities are no longer separated into compartments but become one homogeneous substance or solution. In a solution individual entities cannot be distinguished. What might have been separate entities, such as salt and water for example, become under Neptune’s influence a salt solution, which is different to both salt and pure water but having characteristics of both.

If barriers are completely broken down so that there is unobstructed flow, of knowledge for example, from any direction then the Spirit world or the Subconscious world become accessible to all. These worlds are where dreams come from so Neptune is the Bringer of Dreams. The negative side of this is Illusion. Neptune’s work of dissolving barriers also creates fogs and mists which make it difficult to distinguish reality, hence illusion. If the mind can’t distinguish what is real then it is tempted to create what it thinks is real, in other words the Imagination is in control. This is at the same time the source of both Hope and Fear. Neptune is the Bringer of Dreams yes, but also Illusions and possibly Disillusionment.

Pisces symbolises the Ocean despite the name meaning Fishes. It is simply easier to use Fish to symbolise the Ocean, the Great Pool of Life, – at the same time both the Source from which Life springs and the Sink into which all returns.

Pisces can be seen as completing what was begun in Capricorn and more fully developed in Aquarius. Capricorn is about hierarchical structures built up step by step having a wide base and leading gradually to a peak. The connexions are vertical between top and bottom. Aquarius breaks down this pyramidal structure and rebuilds it as a network with connexions going also sideways and equally as in a net. With Aquarius individuals become nodes in a network or possibly several overlapping networks, having many kinds of links to others. The Pisces phase sees everyone as a node in every network having links to everyone. There are so many nodes and links that it is pointless to talk about networks any longer. There is only one net in which all are caught.

Imagine Capricorn as the mountain from which flows a river which becomes channelled in Aquarius to form sideways connexions. Ultimately all the life giving water flows to the sea to become one great pool of Life. This is the Pisces phase – the Ocean.

The symbol for Pisces is actually a very stylized representation of two fish trying to swim in opposite directions but they are tied together. This is taken to mean a yearning to be an individual on one side and escape from the Ocean onto land in order to evolve and yet at the same time wanting to feel secure and connected in the all encompassing contact and support of the ocean.

In Pisces there are no structures or hierarchy as in Capricorn, nor are there any Aquarian networks or linkages; there is no Them or Us, not even Them and Us, there is only Us.

Some keywords to think about in reference to Pisces are;- Ocean, Space, Subconscious, Universality, Wholeness.

So what will Neptune in Pisces bring about? In a word CHAOS, due to loss of reference points. This process is no doubt helped by Pluto revealing and eliminating all things rotten in autocratic structures and hierarchies. But this is not universal chaos because there are other forces at work also. Saturn for example is still at work building barriers and creating limits elsewhere. Chaos is not necessarily bad but rather a precursor to something new. The old must be completely dissolved before the new can crystallize out of the solution. The chrysalis, wherein all the internal structures are broken down and dissolved, is the precursor to the butterfly.

Neptune can be seen as the bringer of Spiritual or even Religious impulses due to the breakdown of all barriers between the ‘normal’ world and the ‘Great Beyond’. This happened during its previous transit of Neptune thru Pisces when Spiritualism and Theosophy burst into Western consciousness. Spiritualism brought hope and inspiration from the realm ‘beyond ‘ Death. Theosophy and various Magical, Secret Societies brought hope and inspiration from such mysterious places as Egypt, Tibet and even India, which were then beyond the normal knowledge of most of Europe.

It could even be argued that the Communist Manifesto of Marx and Engels was due to a Spiritual or Religious impulse to make all men equal and to incorporate all equally into one all inclusive whole. Perhaps during this transit the world might witness a new Spiritual or Religious impulse giving rise to a new Global ethic. Perhaps we will really begin to see the World as One and realize that there is only One Environment and we are live in it and help to create and sustain it. Could this transit of Neptune thru Pisces see the ‘greening’ of the Earth? That could be one new hope or dream for this transit. Let us hope it does not lead to disillusionment.

Perhaps messages of hope and inspiration will again be received from the ‘Great Beyond’ but this time from the beyond of Space which is ruled by Pisces as much as the Ocean. Are we going to become aware of Aliens among us or finally receive proof of their existence? Will they be the source of hope and inspiration this time?

Perhaps during this period we will also see the rise of a ‘real’ United Nations where people everywhere become united because of hope for their common humanity and not just out of fear of war, or possibly Aliens.

There is certainly an interesting time ahead during this transit. A new hope. May the force be with us!

PLANTS OF AQUARIUS.

Usually the plants associated with a Sign are actually linked to the Planet which is said to ‘rule’ the Sign. Historically Aquarius was ruled by Saturn until the discovery if Uranus, a relatively modern event. Some Astrologers still consider Saturn to be the co-ruler of Aquarius along with Uranus. For that reason many plants associated with Aquarius are actually plants of Saturn.

Another possible reason for association with Aquarius is that it is said to be an ‘Air’ Sign. This means that any plant that grows in air, such as epiphytic Orchids or Bromeliads might be associated with Aquarius. There is also the time of year to consider. Some of the plants listed might be here because they flower during the time of Aquarius, January 21st. until February 20th.

AQUARIUS and CENTRAL HEATING.

That might seem to be an odd association but I think it works. Let me tell you why.

I was sitting here this morning just thinking and trying to get warm. I am in the southern UK and altho the heating has been on for a couple of hours I still wasn’t feeling fully warm. My thoughts were revolving around winter themes and specifically the middle of winter. Aquarius as you know is the middle Sign of Winter so I began thinking, what has the distributive imagery I associate with Aquarius got to do with the coldest time of year (in the Northern Hemisphere)?

In ancient times Aquarius was associated with networks of canals whose function was to distribute life giving water. Over time Aquarius became associated with distribution and networking until nowadays it is associated with the internet which is a network for distribution of information.

So what does this have to do with central heating? Well it occurred to me that in the temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere, where most of us live, distribution of water is not a real problem. There is something we need as much if not more at this time of year and that is heat. We can have all the water we want and access to all sorts of information but if we lack sufficient heat we die. Cold kills.

So that brought me to the central heating system and it came to me that it is Aquarian in nature. Such a system consists of a network of pipes (which can be thought of as channels or canals) distributing life giving heat more evenly. Before central heating was generally available heat would usually come from a central point, the fireplace, and would not be distributed evenly. The ones who gained closest access to this source of heat were probably those with the most authority or power and that is Leo symbolism at work. Aquarius is the opposite of Leo and is concerned with equality, distribution and networks. It seems to me that central heating systems with strategically placed radiators(substitute fireplaces) are very Aquarian and of course they are most used during the coldest time of the year, the time of Aquarius. So there you have it. Just some random thoughts about heat and the associations of Astrology.
